How do we get downtown business engagement?

How do you get them to even read your emails let alone be involved and players in the game?

You've told us you struggle to get businesses to work together and participate in events and promotions.

Here's what you said on our Survey of Rural Challenges:
  • “Many of our merchants won’t participate in group promos.”
  • “Businesses don’t cooperate with each other!”
  • “The ‘competitiveness’ of small town business is killing me! It doesn’t even matter if businesses are in completely different lines of work – in this town it feels like they are out to see the others fail.”
  • “How do we get past the apathy of our small business owners? No cooperation”

You CAN get businesses on board.

Practical steps to break through apathy, find bright spots and get cooperation to happen over and over

Deb knows this challenge personally. Here's her introduction from the video:

'This is a challenge I have first-hand knowledge of from my time as a chamber of commerce director in Webster City, Iowa. It felt like an enormous part of my job was trying to entice, convince and drag people from businesses into participating in our chamber projects and events.

'We also hear this challenge from you often, on our Survey of Rural Challenges and in your stories you share with us. You’ve said things like,
“How do you get businesses to even read your emails let alone be involved and volunteer?”
“How do we get past the apathy of our small business owners? There’s no cooperation.”

'I came up with a few new ideas as a chamber director, and over the past eight years at SaveYour.Town, we have collected even more innovative ideas from communities across the United States in Canada. And those are what we are going to share with you today, along with several foundational principles that will help change your thinking and make your work easier.

'First, forget about dragging business people to committee meetings.'

TikTok-inspired trends to revolutionize your workday

Think about the rise of TikTok and viral crazes: The center is what the algorithm thinks you’ll like, and popularity comes from small participation from lots of people who seldom connect personally.

Your old way committees are like the old social media: it’s centered on personal connections. That's why it keeps coming back to the same ten people. Your new way is centered around activities and experiences.

You can trust SaveYour.Town's Becky McCray and Deb Brown to share practical advice for rural communities.

As a chamber of commerce director, Deb Brown felt this challenge firsthand: changing the way they approached businesses, and working together on creating projects like RVTV that far exceeded anything previously seen in town.

As a retail store owner, Becky McCray was that reluctant business person you've been trying to reach. Her insights help get right at the motivation, or lack thereof!

Build a fairer community

Throughout 2022, we're focused on helping you build a fairer, more unified community. With all the forces that feel like they're pulling us apart, we want to help local communities like yours join together better.

In the old way of working with businesses, only people with the free time and money to serve on committees can get involved. In this video, you'll learn how to reach more business owners, including those from different cultures or even across language barriers.

What people like you say about SaveYour.Town videos

This video stimulated lots of note-taking and conversation between the business owners gathered at my house. Deb and Becky gave us some new ideas and several excellent examples of known models. I think some of us are thinking of pivoting our summer’s plans after participating in Wednesday’s event. Thanks for a well-thought out presentation!

Jonya Pacey, Minnesota

What a TERRIFIC marketing Video. I had 20 businesses show up to watch and they all left with new ideas and an excitement to get back and start implementing! I’ve already had 5 businesses reach out in less than 2 hours after it ended, that are already putting your ideas into action.

Mandy Walsh, City of Lampasas, Texas

There are always great take-aways from the videos that can be put into place immediately. One of my favorites is changing your store's evening vibe (different music, lighting, etc.) because evening shoppers are not the same as day time shoppers.

Videos by SaveYour.Town are fun way to learn some no-nonsense alternatives to community inertia.
